PI Update: Standard Oil On The Island

If you read this Blog regularly you know we've had some recent discussion about the old Standard Oil companies of which there are many and each of them has the rights to use the Standard name in specific states. So we were fascinated to see this photo taken in 2015 of the side of Jock Lindsey's Hanger Bar on Pleasure Island.

The side of the building has numerous old-fashioned signs and this one for "Esso" caught our attention. While Chevron has the rights to use the Standard name in Florida, Exxon does not. Exxon does own the Esso name (Esso is pronounced S.O. which stands for Standard Oil.) No copyright infringement here as these are all retro signs and even many Exxon/Mobil stations in Florida now carry a small Esso logo near the gas pumps. As these are 2015 photos, we will check out if these signs are still there during our next Island visit.
