DS Update: Beatrix Ain't Progressing

This is the view of the Beatrix site in Disney Springs West Side that we posted this past summer. When covid19 struck the area and Disney Springs closed, construction went into hiatus and remains in that status today. You'll recall that this parcel is where Bongos Cuban Cafe once stood.

 

It largely looks the same today except the land contains more weeds than it did then.

PI Update: The Demise Of Motion

10 years ago today Disney did not yet know about a future Disney Springs but it did already plan to create a new pedestrian pathway from Downtown Disney Marketplace to Downtown Disney West Side by building a pathway that required the tearing down of club Motion. 10 years ago the demolition began as pieces of the front facade were removed prior to bulldozers moving in!

The planned walkway would be routed through this castmember-only service corridor between Raglan Road and Portobello Country Italian Trattoria. At the time we called this area the "Motion Corridor" and this is what it looked like when it first opened in November, 2014 here.

As they readied Motion to come down, they also readied neighboring Rock'n'Roll Beach Club to come down next by removing all the glass windows.

Watching a special edition of DJ Kimball Collins' (USA) show last night on Twitch TV and hearing "Funkytown"by Lipps Inc.  Now, that's some early 80's at it's finest!!

NYE Sadness At WDW

I've seen nothing official from Walt Disney World about this but their website still reads, when it comes to Atlantic Dance Hall:

Atlantic Dance Hall - Temporarily Unavailable

Three weeks from tonight is New Years Eve so with ADH still shuttered due to Covid19, there won't be a NYE DJ party there either. As we previously reported, Disney theme parks will close early on NYE including EPCOT so no DJ parties "around the world" this year at EPCOT.

Let's hope for a much better 2021!

Since EPCOT is closing at 8PM on NYE and their DJ concerts "around the world" are not happening this year, it becomes more important than ever to provide alternate choices for you. Thus, we will post our NYE options article before Christmas this year, on Monday, December 21st.

 

Wings Over Downtown!

For the past few months I have been taste-testing Buffalo wings in downtown Orlando to see who had the best ones. This was a non-scientific study based on a single visit and with just me doing the tasting and eating. The requested flavor was always buffalo medium. We began with Ember where you can dine inside or outside on their patio. The french fries were not tested here. Having watched DJ's play at Ember and having sizzling plates of wings pass by, I knew they'd probably be good. And they were. Deep fried crispy and a really good wing sauce. The presentation was nice as well. GRADE: A-

Elixir Bar is a popular location for lunch and Buffalo wings are on the menu. The fries were of the coated variety which is a downer for me. And while I had heard good things about their wings, I didn't quite figure them out. To be good, wings should be deep fried but I couldn't tell with Ember's wings whether they were deep fried or baked in an oven like you do boxed Tyson wings from the grocery store. They tasted pretty good though. GRADE: B-

I never knew the bar Harp & Celt had a restaurant but someone mentioned it to me so I needed to check them out. The wings were decent as were the frozen but not coated fries. GRADE: B

Ace Cafe used to have something called Mahogany wings which were blackened and carried a unique flavor. During a recent visit I did not notice that name on the menu and just requested "wings". The flavor was good but some of them were still a bit gooey. The fries were of the coated variety so that was disappointing. GRADE: B-

Harry Buffalo is a Cleveland-based restaurant chain that has a location downtown on Church Street. With a name that includes "Buffalo", you'd think they'd have good wings. They do. These were the best I experienced downtown. The fries did not appear to be fresh cut but some did have skins on them. GRADE: A

Sly Fox added food to their drink menu during the bar/club closures this past spring which allowed them to remain open. The order size is ample and came soaked in medium sauce. They were crispy and good; did not try the fries. Worthwhile. GRADE: B+

Not included in the downtown contest are my favorite wings in the Orlando metro and that's Wings of Winter Garden on Colonial Drive in Winter Garden. They have a unique sauce I've not run into anywhere else and their curly fries are cut right there from fresh potatoes. Pappa Bees in Longwood also has great wings and they use fresh cut fries. So there you have it; the best wings in downtown Orlando IMO is: Harry Buffalo.

DS Update: Jeans Out, Sneakers In

Fit2Run will be returning to Disney Springs according to the WDWMagic website. You'll recall they had occupied this space next to Curl by Sammy Duval from when they opened in 2013 until they closed in 2019 to make way for a still not completed M&M's store.

They will be moving into this spot in the Town Center's Arcade Building recently vacated by the Lucky Brand store. Jeans out, sneakers in!

Historic Club Report: Atlantic Dance Hall

December has arrived so let's go back exactly 10 years to 2010 and see what was happening at Atlantic Dance Hall in Disney's Boardwalk Resort.

DJ Pat (USA) was delivering the Top 40 music videos that night.

Many of us former Pleasure Islanders hung out at ADH back then including this group from 8TRAX, Motion and Mannequins.

While ADH is currently closed due to covid, the music played in 2021 will be the same songs they played in 2010, lol.

Like the "Cupid Shuffle".

Back in 2010 the jeans were mostly baggy.

But a good time was had by all.
