Club Reports: Syn Nightclub, El Quinto, Vain Nightclub, Eye Spy

Saturday nights are usually better than Fridays but such is not the case this weekend with lots happening in da citi!  Starting things off at Syn Nightclub for their "Trouble Fridays".
With alternating sets from DJ's Mike Masci and Meaux Green!
The music was a mix of House, Tech House, Progressive, Dance.....but all EDM!
The dance floor would fill up and then it would empty out.  Then it would fill up and then it would empty out.
I remember Meaux Green opening for DJ Icey at Vain a couple Januarys ago.  That was a great night!
It's "International Night" at The Fifth which on Fridays becomes El Quinto!
And in the booth, visiting from Latin Quarter at CityWalk, none other than DJ Leony! (Sirius/XM BPM, RadioDanz)
The entire club is a dance floor so just find any spot!
The place is jammed with nice scenery.
The music a mix of mostly House and Latin House.  Check it out.
Yes, I had had a couple drinks at this point but I swear the sign was moving when I took this picture outside Vain Nightclub.
They usually bring in international guest DJ's on Fridays such as DJ/Producer Morten Breum (DK).
The dance floor stayed jammed as did the entire two level club.
You can never go wrong with Go Go girls!
Vain is located in the space originally occupied back in the day by club Cairo. Everytime I'm in here they've added new lighting or effects.
Morten's hit "Everytime (You Look at Me)" made it to #1 on his native Danish dance chart.

Originally from Aarhus, he's currently based in Los Angeles.
His set last night was mostly well-known EDM hits you hear on dance radio stations.
Eye Spy wasn't on my list last night but the great sound of Top 40/Dance coming out the door on my way to the parking garage (car park for our UK readers) forced me to go inside!
The source of these great sounds: resident DJ Parry.
The mostly outdoor dance floor was literally packed!
Eye Spy has gone mostly EDM!
Spotted: Wearing cool knee socks and one of her own necklace designs from Love and Leather, Renee was found dancing near the DJ booth.  As you can tell, a good time was had by all!

Last Look Inside: Rock'n'Roll Beach Club

Continuing our "Last Look Inside" series of articles about Pleasure Island clubs.  When PI opened, the building that would later become Rock'n'Roll Beach Club was home to XZFR Rockin' Rollerdrome, a place where you could strap on a pair of roller skates, drink and race around the multi-level facility while listening to Rock music. What was Disney thinking?  It didn't last long.
In early 1990 it was rethemed as Rock'n'Roll Beach Club.  It was still a multi-level Rock venue but without the skates!  And they had a live band each night.
While all the PI dance and comedy clubs closed the night of September 27, 2008, RRBC was closed much earlier on February 2, 2008.  At the time there had been no announcement about anything else closing too so there didn't seem to be much discussion about what was going on.  Island sources would later tell the Blog that the RRBC building was leased to a third party vendor so quickly that it gave DTD management the idea to shut everything down, figuring they'd have everything leased in no time!  Of course the economy tanked, nothing else ever got leased and whoever supposedly leased RRBC backed-out!
So like most everything else on the Island, it sat empty and unused.
A couple shots looking in back in September, 2010, more than 2.5 years post-closure.
With Hyperion Wharf supposedly on the way, club Motion (right rear) would be demolished in late 2010/early 2011 while RRBC waited for its turn.
And by February, 2011, Rock'n'Roll Beach Club was gone forever!

EDM is getting play at CityWalk now but when Mannequins first closed, the only place to hear it at CW ironically was at Latin Quarter when DJ Leony (USA) would go into one of his 10-30 minute House sets!  And Leony, who has EDM shows on Sirius/XM, RadioDanz and other carriers, is playing House and Latin House this Friday night at The Fifth!

EDM @ DHS

Blog reader Juliet L. was out at Disney Hollywood Studios this past weekend and emailed us these camera phone pictures of DJ Elliot (Stitch's Club 626 Dance Party, DTD Fountain & Waterside Stages, Disney Cruise Line) spinning Star Wars remixes, EDM and Electrohouse.  The dance party takes place just prior to Snig & Oopla's Hyperspace Hoopla and this coming Friday - Sunday is your last chance to enjoy Star Wars Weekendsthis year!  Juliet reports that a lot of people were dancing!  You can also listen to it here:

DJ Elliot, who was dressed as DJ Lobot for the recent Star Wars-themed "May the 4th Be With You" dance party this past May 4th, will also be the DJ for their 4th of July celebration at the Hat StageDHS has also announced a new nightly event called "Monsters University Homecoming".  Elliot will be the Sunday, Monday and Wednesday DJ for that dance party with DJ Lon (PI Live, Celebrate Tonight, DTD Waterside Stage ) on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  We're told the writers for this new show recently visited the highly popular "Mad T Party" at Disney California Adventure park and "MUH" could end up being Florida's version of that EDM dance party!  Apparently there is growing recognition at Disney that EDM has gotten huge and DJ's are the new celebrities!

PI Update: Mannequins Reunion

Since Pleasure Island closed in 2008, Comedy Warehouse has had reunions.  Adventurers Club has had reunions. Club Motion has had numerous reunions at Atlantic Dance Hall.  Last year Save Pleasure Island Blog hosted two 8TRAX reunions at Retro Room.  And now our biggest undertaking yet, a reunion for the club that at one time was voted best in America:  Mannequins Dance Palace

We're working on a location, we're working on a date, we're working with the MDP DJ's you know and love!  And most important, we're working with the best producer/promotion company in Florida, one that regularly brings in the world's top DJ's!  We should know within a month or so whether this can be pulled-off and done right!

So many of you want to relive Mannequins one more time.  This may be your chance.  Stay tuned!

Club Reports: Retro Room, Loft55, Don Jefe's, Suite B Lounge

A beautiful Saturday night in O-Town and starting things off at Retro Room!
DJ Pete Haynes (8TRAX, Motion, Pat O'Brien's) in the control tower spinning 70's, 80's & 90's music as they're known to do at Retro Room!
Early crowd was watching NBA & NHL playoffs rather than dancing though.
Spotted: Mannequins & 8TRAX peeps!
Retro Room is expanding and that wall to the right is coming down this week!  Ultimately they're going to build a new stage for live bands and possibly relocate the booth and dance floor.  Retro Room is located in Four Corners on US 192 near Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Checking out Loft55 downtown which as been running hot and cold on weekend nights.
DJ Mario Peters (Prive', Tomorrowland) on the decks spinning House music.

Just a small crowd on hand around midnight.  Last visit in March you couldn't hardly move around!
But look for a grand reopening of sorts in two weeks and we'll provide more details once we have them.
First visit to Don Jefe's, newly opened in the space where club Antigua used to be located.  It's another one of those places downtown that serves as both a restaurant and club.
With DJ A-Rock (Tier Nightclub, Vintage Lounge) playing Top 40/Dance.
The place was pretty full but no one was dancing.
Except the Go Go girls.  You can never go wrong with Go Go girls!
Towards the rear, memories of Antigua.
Over to favorite Suite B Lounge.
DJ Larry Banks was on the controls playing House and Progressive House.
A very late party place, people were just beginning to filter in around 1am.
Spotted: Legendary DJ Dave Cannalte (Mannequins, AAHZ, Promo Only) enjoying the music.  Don't forget the final ever AAHZ Reunion takes place in just one month at The Beacham.  Tickets here.  This is a do not miss event featuring not only Cannalte but also Kimball Collins and Steve Fortier.
A few dancers on the floor.
Drinking PBR with a straw....awesome!  A good time was had by all!

PI Update: How the Closing Of Pleasure Island Has Cost Disney $Millions!

There are plenty of people out there that hated Pleasure Island and were glad to see it shuttered.  Those are the same people who without the benefit of access to Disney's accounting books are quick to tell you that Pleasure Island was an expensive operation and lost money every year.  So to them it only made sense that leasing the club spaces to outsourced shops and restaurants was justified and would be far more profitable.  As we approach the 5 year anniversary of the clubs closing, one only needs to walk around PI to see all the success!

Of course Disney knew that by closing Pleasure Island that they would lose most of the evening entertainment dollars of their adult guests.  They decided that they were willing to give that up.  And they even knew that most of those lost entertainment dollars would be going to their biggest competitor, Universal's CityWalk. And they were still willing to do that.  But their analysis was flawed. It was a decision that has ended up costing them far more millions of dollars than they ever anticipated!

If there was any doubt about whether Universal CityWalk would go after Disney's adult guests, that doubt was erased on August 8, 2008 when CityWalk included advertising stickers in the Orlando Sentinel that could be redeemed for a free CityWalk Party PassUni was going after locals with this offer because it was only included in home delivery editions of the paper, not in newstand editions.  They repeated the stickers on August 15th and September 5th.  And things got even wilder when Universal announced, just 3 days before Pleasure Island's "final night", that they would honor Pleasure Island Annual Passes through March 31, 2009.  "Bring us your PI AP and we'll give you a CityWalk AP!"

Pleasure Island and CityWalk were / are similar beasts.  Both had / have shops, restaurants.....and multiple dance clubs.  Both drew / draw similar crowds at night.  One can argue about which was better but that's not the point.  Anyone thinking PI was a money-loser would have to think CW was a money-loser too.  Of course neither were money-losers.  Both were profitable and with PI closed, CityWalk began raking it in!  I can remember asking management at CityWalk what it was like not having any competition from Disney.  He never answered my question but the huge shit-eating grin he gave me answered it anyway.  CityWalk was not only more profitable than ever, they were rolling in money!

And that's where Disney's horrible miscalculation came into play.  I had questioned CW management about why none of these profits were ever being put back into the clubs.  The Groove in 2008/2009 was nearly exactly the same as it was when I visited it several times around 2000/2001.  The answer, as it turned out, was that Universal was using CityWalk's profits to fund something called The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

And that is how Disney has lost more millions of dollars than they ever expected.  They knew and were willing to give up Pleasure Island's revenue.  They knew and were willing to give up Pleasure Island's profits.  But what they didn't anticipate was by freely giving all that money to their arch rival, that the arch rival would use the money to fund something so fantastic that it's caused many Disney guests to spend 1-2 days of their 7-day vacation at Universal instead of at Disney!  And that is the $Millions that Disney has lost forever and continues to lose.  All because they closed Pleasure Island
