EDM @ DHS
Blog reader Juliet L. was out at Disney Hollywood Studios this past weekend and emailed us these camera phone pictures of DJ Elliot (Stitch's Club 626 Dance Party, DTD Fountain & Waterside Stages, Disney Cruise Line) spinning Star Wars remixes, EDM and Electrohouse. The dance party takes place just prior to Snig & Oopla's Hyperspace Hoopla and this coming Friday - Sunday is your last chance to enjoy Star Wars Weekends™ this year! Juliet reports that a lot of people were dancing! You can also listen to it here:
DJ Elliot, who was dressed as DJ Lobot for the recent Star Wars-themed "May the 4th Be With You" dance party this past May 4th, will also be the DJ for their 4th of July celebration at the Hat Stage. DHS has also announced a new nightly event called "Monsters University Homecoming". Elliot will be the Sunday, Monday and Wednesday DJ for that dance party with DJ Lon (PI Live, Celebrate Tonight, DTD Waterside Stage ) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We're told the writers for this new show recently visited the highly popular "Mad T Party" at Disney California Adventure park and "MUH" could end up being Florida's version of that EDM dance party! Apparently there is growing recognition at Disney that EDM has gotten huge and DJ's are the new celebrities!

hmmm.....it's EDM but pretty crappy EDM....IMO....
Unfortunately don't have crowd pics to post but Juliet tells me there was a huge crowd there with a lot of people dancing. So I think the people there disagree with you.
OH that means nothing I have seen people dance to SLOW stuff! got to remember one thing this took place in tourist town with KIDS and lots of people who have no idea what REAL EDM or any club music is!
^ True. Still when I listened to the clip I got visions of clowns and hefeumps and woozles. ECM (Electronic Circus Music)for sure. Fire the DJ! They can do better...
>Fire the DJ! They can do better...
If you're a DJ yourself you must be a pretty poor one who can't judge his audience. I think this DJ was playing for who was there which is a disney family crowd.
Transitions are little strange but he's basically playing Top 40 and commercial club stuff. The whole Star Wars thing is cheesy but behind that, it's not bad. How does this compare to what they do at City Walk on the weekends?

anyone could have that kind of audience! not saying he is not a good DJ but that is not a reason to say he is GOOD!
AGAIN these people will be there if the DJ played Country, rock ETC.....
If the music wasn't good then the Disney guests would move on.
How does this compare to what they do at City Walk on the weekends?
again MOST people dont care about good club music! they will Dance to anything!
All these anonymous posts, wow... Great comments from everyone. You're right it's not true EDM... but look at what everyone else on property is playing right now. When they originally pitched the idea for the party it wasn't anything like it is now. Getting Disney to realize that a format like this can work has been a slow arduous process. Most of you are correct too, I'm not playing in a nightclub full of people like you dying to hear great EDM, House, Progressive, and Underground music... These are families on vacation, with kids, and in order to keep them around and happy you have to play to them as well. Trust me there is the music I "want" to play and the music I "can" play. Being under the Disney name comes with rules and expectations, but I along with a few others are working hard to change that. These first events are a path with which to open the door... so take it for what it is... If you want them to "fire the DJ" realize that I'm one of the few spearheading this campaign to bring this music into the parks, and I will continue to do so with or without your support, because it's the music that I love... much like yourselves. Thanks for the feedback.
I was at one of the Star Wars dance parties and got to see Stitchs Club 626 party at the Magic Kingdom. The music is top 40 type music and the dj's really draw the crowds. Yes it's cheesy but as @djElliot just said, it's a start because you never heard this king of music at Disney before. Thanks djElliot.
I never said you where not A DJ! just the point is! this is on Disney! and Disney rules! trust I know their dumb *ss rules!
and for this crowd yes you have to kinda play radio stuff!
but would LOVE to hear what U can really play! if u had the chance!
but are you goin to play the new remixes of old stuff!
DJ Elliot is helping push EDM at Disney and I'm told Disney management has been very impressed so far about how many people actually stand to watch (and dance to) DJ music versus the far more expensive live bands they've used in the past. If you like EDM (and all Mannequins fans do) then you shouldn't be beating up the guy that's pushing that agenda for us!
The call to "fire the DJ" is an absolutely stupid ill-informed comment to make. The problem we see in way too many club-settings are DJ's who play what THEY THEMSELVES want and ignore what their audience wants. That's a sure path to failure. This applies doubly to the family setting that are Disney parks. You've got to keep the Moms and the kids engaged or they move on to the next ride. And yes, unless you're David Guetta or similar, you always have to please management!
How does this compare to CityWalk? First of all you're comparing a nightclub district to music being played in a theme park. You can't compare that. Second, EDM has been emerging quite nicely at CityWalk as well. As DJ Smooth told us a few years ago, CityWalk is largely tourists and they were expecting Hip Hop so that's what was delivered. But the current crop of tourists (and locals) are much-more expecting EDM since that's the source of much of today's hits. So you have DJ's like Willy, King & Smooth pushing the genre more now than they could have just a few years ago.
I hear let me think about it! MDP!
well Disney kept DJ PETE and DJ Dominick! so I guess your correct PI failed cause of them! see you are right! when your right Bob your are right!
just think if they would have dumped them a long time ago! PI would still be open thanks for the help on this one Bob!
