EDC Week: This Weekend In Techno Town

EDC Week: Electric Daisy Carnival Returns This Friday!

The 10th edition of Electric Daisy Carnival - Orlando begins this Friday at Tinker Field beside Camping World Stadium. Check out the official EDC trailer right here.

Trip Report: Madrid & Lisbon

Quick trip to Europe this weekend, leaving Thursday night and arriving into Portugal on Friday afternoon and then returning back to the United States on Saturday. Flying TAP Air Portugal, there was a connection in Lisbon and headed to my destination Madrid, Spain.

In terms of population, Madrid is the 2nd highest in the EU after Berlin. On approach MAD.

Transportation from the airport into the city was via the Madrid Metro.

My destination was near the Puerta del Sol in the center of Madrid.

On this chilly Friday night, the streets were filled with shoppers and diners. My hotel was near the Madrid Airport in the Barajas district.

Although I connected in Lisbon on the outbound, there was no time to visit. But returning to the United States yesterday I had a 5 hour connection time which allowed me time to go briefly into town.

Both my departures from LIS operated from regular airport gates but both my arrivals (coming and going) operated from remote gates which then necessitated a bus ride to the terminal. This is actually not that uncommon at European airports where there just aren't enough gates.

Transportation from the airport into the city was via the Metro de Lisboa.

Not a lot of time to wander around though. The Ave. de Liberdade. Interestingly, it was 35F° in Madrid at 7AM yesterday morning when I departed but 52F° in Lisbon at 7AM upon arrival. Although both cities are at about the same latitude, Madrid is on a high plateau around 2200' altitude while Lisbon is close to sea level along the Atlantic Ocean coast.

This trip was the first time flying with TAP Air Portugal. The return to Newark was on this Airbus A330-900neo. Had an empty seat next to me so that was nice!

All too soon we were on our way, leaving the European continent behind us and not seeing any more land until 6 hours later along the coast of Nova Scotia. A good time was had by.....me.

Club Reports: Is The Why Not Lounge Coming Back?

Our sister website Orlando Entertainment News caught a rumor this weekend that predicted that the venerable Why Not Lounge in Altamonte Springs may be returning! As you may recall, the large "lounge" was located for years inside the Holiday Inn - Altamonte Springs but after it lost it's Holiday Inn flag, the hotel changed ownership and names (Howard Johnson Plaza, Clarion, Magnuson Grand, etc) numerous times over the years and changed from a business hotel to more of an extended stay property. At some point one of the owners apparently sold the liquor license and the Why Not Lounge closed forever in late-January, 2015. The hotel is currently called the Opal Hotel and Suites. Well according to the rumor, a bar/club will be reopening there late this year and it will be called the Why Not Lounge once again! We hope their famous Thursday night Ladies Night, a mainstay of north Orlando club nights for literally decades, returns as well. We'll keep you updated!

It never happened last year due to the covid situation but the Visage Reunion returns this year ft. DJ Paul Vaine (USA).  The event is taking place on Saturday, December 11th at Barbarella downtown! Like their prior reunions, it will be packed! Admission is typically just $5.

PI Update: Just Five Years Ago

Let's cross this bridge one more time to beautiful Pleasure Island.....but 5 years ago this month!

At Adventurers Club, the cupula roof was changing.

While heavy renovations to the exterior and interior walls were in progress. Nonetheless, you can go into the replacement The Edison and still "feel" some of the prior AC features.

Planet Hollywood was being renovated into Planet Hollywood Observatory. Interestingly, while the sign above the front entrance does indeed say "Observatory", the venue itself still just goes by the Planet Hollywood name.

An empty lot still remained between the gelato shop and Raglan Road.

And Erwin Pearl Jewelry didn't have any customers. This day in history.

WDW Update: The NYE Parties Are On!

I know we've gone back and forth on this subject but it's only because Disney was sending out conflicting signals about their intent for NYE. Well we can now inform you that NYE DJ dance parties at EPCOT are ON for December 31st as we've received confirmation on the subject from several different DJ's. We're working on a roster for the night including operating hours so stay tuned for that information. Atlantic Dance Hall will be having their NYE party as well. Also, there will be FREE DJ dance parties at Disney Springs this year and we'll include that information once it's all compiled. If you plan to be at EPCOT, be aware that not only do you need a ticket/admission for that night but you also must make reservations for each guest.

AAHZ Update: AAHZ Is Back!!

The AAHZ Reunion is returning this year! Taking place on Thanksgiving Eve at The Beacham, the event will feature DJ Icey (USA), DJ Kimball Collins (USA), former Mannequins DJ Dave Cannalte (USA) and coming out of retirement for one night only, DJ Baby Anne (USA).
