DS Update: Splitsville The Big Meh

Ten years ago this month there was excitement in the air as Splitsville neared completion. In all of Downtown Disney, there was very little music or dancing and Splitsville offered us hope.

Of course it was just a bowling alley as these peeks in the window showed the Brunswick brand name on some of the scoring monitors.

But signs that indicated that there would be Dancing & Drinking had us all intrigued. When it finally opened, they did have a dance floor upstairs with a DJ playing Top 40 music. It didn't take long for it to fizzle out though since there was little promotion about it.  I wonder why?

Trip Report: CocoCay, Bahamas

So we're back in the United States following our 2-night cruise on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas. A 2-night cruise means just 1 day away though and our only port was their private island, CocoCay (Little Stirrup Cay), Bahamas. It's a beautiful white sand island. We previously did an article  about it earlier this year titled "Sad Day At CocoCay" and you can find that here.

There's an Aerophile-operated helium balloon ride at CocoCay very similar to the one at Disney Springs except that a ride costs around $75. High winds during our visit kept it from operating though.

 

Nonetheless, a good time was had by all.

This is Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas docked at Coco Cay (Little Stirrup Cay), Bahamas. This is a special 2-night sailing from Port Canaveral and last night we checked-out some of the parties and clubs onboard. The pics are posted on OEN here.

DTD Update: Ridemakerz To Reopen In Mall

Everybody remembers Ridemakerz, the shop that took up space in the former Virgin Megastore location in Downtown Disney West Side. During the bleakest days of DTD, after Pleasure Island had closed, the West Side also had a huge vacancy gap with Virgin having shuttered its massive store.

Well Ridemakerz is coming back, but not to Disney Springs. They're opening a store in the Florida Mall. They will be located in the wing that runs between Dillard's and Macy's. Vroom Vroom!

CW Update: What About The New Park?

I was chatting with Save Pleasure Island Blog roving reporter Thommy this past weekend about the Epic Universe theme park under construction at the south end of Kirkman Road. It's scheduled to open in mid-2025. Thommy indicated that he had heard that Universal will have some kind of entertainment district there, something that had not yet come to my attention. In reading various articles about it on the internet yesterday, there is some disagreement whether this entertainment district will be outside the theme park gates or within it. Of course, if it's within it, one would need a theme park ticket to go to it. 

 

While the current Universal CityWalk is outside theme park gates, it pretty much requires use of theme park garages to access which has been a downfall for retail. Yes, parking is now free after 6PM (except during special events such as Halloween Horror Nights) but it's impractical to go to any stores there during the day unless you have a pass with free parking. So retailers located there including restaurants, shops and even the theater can't maximize customers except for those using the parks. So the big question is, if there will be an entertainment district at Epic Universe, will it be separate enough that daytime customers can access it? Only time will tell since announcements about the project have been relatively few.
