PI Update: Remembering Laffers Cantina

It's hard to believe but 15 years ago this month, Laffers Cantina had reopened for business on an otherwise dead Pleasure Island. The bar's name came from it being adjacent Comedy Warehouse. Facing West End Plaza, the bar operated on the lower level while the upper level began use as a DJ booth to play music to guests passing by.

This Week In 1980

When I was growing up in Chicagoland there were two Top 40 radio stations that competed with each other. Those were WCFL located at 1000 on the AM dial and WLS, located at 890 on the AM dial. And this week in 1980, this was the hit parade! WOW!

MMW Day 1: Nexus Radio Lounge (South Beach)

Nexus Radio is an internet radio station that features Electronic Dance Music. This past Thursday we visited with them as they interviewed dozens of the world's top DJ's who were in Miami for Miami Music Week. DS Update: What's New?

The closed Everything But Water store in the Arcade Building, Disney Springs Town Center, has been replaced with Rothy's. It's a casual shoe store for men, women and children.

Meanwhile, the closed Art of Shaving store on Hill Street, Pleasure Island remains empty. A sign on the window indicates something is coming soon but that might just be a generic sign and not be referring to anything specific. We'll keep you updated!

DS Update: Drey-C Forever!

In 2012 outdoor musical entertainment first began on Pleasure Island with various acts performing in several spots around the Island. One of the original acts was the Andre Caram Band ft. Drey-C. Various band members would come and go over the years but Drey-C was always there. Now, 12 years later, he's still performing but only under his own name and not a band's name. Come check him out tomorrow (Friday) night on the Advent Health Waterside Stage in Disney Springs Marketplace. Show times are 6:15pm, 7:15pm, 8:15pm and 9:15pm.

DS Update: Food Truck Park

Ten years ago this month the food truck craze was in full existence and Disney did not want to miss out on it in then Downtown Disney. So as they constructed "highline" overpasses everwhere on the West Side, they decided to turn the open grassy expanse adjacent Bongos Cuban Cafe into Food Truck Park where up to 5 different food trucks could park and offer Quick-Service. We think it opened that way but not for long. The name of the area was changed to Expo Park (now called Exposition Park) and there typically is only two food trucks parked there. With so many good restaurant choices in Disney Springs, apparently not that many want to eat food off a truck.

 

Downtown Update: Neon Beach

This is the former downtown location of Neon Beach Club which closed last year. Located on Orange Avenue, it was unfortunately a block north of Washington Street and thus unnoticed by most downtown revelers. It will reopen soon as German restaurant Schmankerlstubn.

PI Update: Mighty St. Patrick's Festival Lineup

During March, 2014, ten years ago this month, Raglan Road was able to use the Mannequins foyer as an additional spot to sell beer. St. Patrick's Day weekend is a busy time at Raglan Road. This year's Mighty St. Patrick's Festival begins next Thursday and runs through next Sunday, March 14-17. You can find the entertainment schedule here.
