Club Report: The Groove

At least three Groove DJ's have told me that you can't play electronic dance music at The Groove because the crowd does not want it. Well OMG, DJ Willy (8TRAX, PI Live, Rock'n'Roll Beach Club) proved them wrong last night as he masterfully weaved long Top 40/House/Dance sets with several obligatory Hip Hop sets and kept the dance floor absolutely jammed!!
With the main tourist season on hiatus, have to assume it was mostly locals in the club that just kept getting more and more crowded as the night went on. I knew it was going to be a good night when I walked in around 10:30pm to Afrojack's Take Over Control followed by a good thirty minutes of more EDM!
EDM dominated the night but he kept anyone looking for Hip Hop satisfied with three or four shorter sets of that stuff more typically heard and expected in The Groove.
An incredible defining moment of the night was when he put on nearly the entire version of Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up. Initially the dancers didn't know what to do with it but as the song built-up these two guys crouched down, their group crouched down and then half the damn club did the same! It was incredible and I've never seen anything like it in there. DJ Peapod would be proud. If only that floor revolved.
So much of Top 40 is now in the EDM category and so many traditional Hip Hop artists have embraced it that it was easy to pull this off. But Apple Bottom Jeans and I Like Big Butts was there too for anyone needing it. What made it work was containing the Hip Hop within its own segments rather than mixing it all together. No one walked off the floor!
Club Motion!!
And a good time was had by all. Electronic Dance Music at The Groove.  It works!! Awesome night Willy!!

Willy says he is kind of a floater DJ at CityWalk currently. But next time I see him I'll inquire about whether he has a website or Facebook.
