Mannequins Reunion Cancelled!

Disney has rejected my offer to have a Mannequins music night at Soundstage Club. The event had been tentatively planned for Saturday, May 2nd. I was fronting the entire cost of renting the club and meeting a $5000 drink sales quota with the idea of selling tickets to get my money back. And had the event not resulted in a financial loss to me, I was going to to do monthly rentals to keep this going. Our favorite DJ would have appeared.

The hangup seems to have been over the selling of tickets even though another music event organizer is doing just that elsewhere on Disney property, just not at PI. In an e-mail to me yesterday, my Disney rep wrote: Thank you for providing the information on (name of other event). Upon further research, I have found that they have a somewhat different set of circumstances and commitments that have afforded them the opportunity to offer tickets to pre-sell for their event. Unfortunately, we are not able to pass on that process to you.

So I regret to inform everyone that there is NOT going to be a Mannequins reunion at this time. (at least not at Pleasure Island)

  1. Is Mannequins or any of the other clubs actually stripped of its equipment, or is it rumors? It's hard to believe that Disney would be that much in a hurry to remove equipment and not wait to see the repercussions of closing the clubs.

  3. Joe, Mannequins and 8TRAX are stripped of lighting and electronic equipment but are otherwise entact. We're hoping the rumor is true that a third party operator is going to reopen them.

Anonymous, if you look way down in my club listings under DJ events you'll see a few big name DJ's coming to town that will play at Rix and Typhoon Lagoon, both on Disney property. DJ Boris was originally playing at Motion but that was moved to Rix. Don't know why, since Rix is tiny.

  4. Thanks for initiating and leading a strong effort towards staging a Mannequins reunion.

I'm wondering if the management at the Alantic Dance Hall (ADH) at Disney's Boardwalk complex, would be interested in staging an official Mannequin's reunion. Or,you could arrange an unofficial "Mannequins reunion meet-up" at ADH for some specific Friday or Saturday date and we could keep requesting techno songs; no financial risk for you.

  5. I work AD occasionally and there are multiple issues with it.
    1) It's extremely expensive to rent out. It's somewhere in the neighborhood of 30k to rent
    2) meeting a particular night would work except that because they are a video format, most of the DJs will not play anything without a video to go with it. Unfortunately, there are not many remixes with videos. On top of it, each DJ has their own library and thus one might hardly have any techno while another has a better selection.

  6. I know a DJ that works there. I'll inquire about what kind of techno library he has access to that includes videos.

Also, a lot of Top 40 songs have videos and have been remixed into "dance" versions. They could be played too.

  8. So, I am new to these forms and heard over and over and hoped over and over that the clubs would open, but they wont. Disney gave in to Orange County because of so much pressure put on them by the county due to all of the arrests that would occur nightly when the PI Clubs closed. It was not a matter of Money. They were "cash cows" and making great money, and still would today! But Orange County Police/Sheriff but so much pressure on Disney. :( This is horrible! I miss my Mannequins! As does everyone on this site, but I have confirmed this with both sides, disney, and orange county.

  9. It's hard to believe that Disney would give in. What about CityWalk? I'm sure they have the the same type of problems, and with an increase in customers due to PI closing they don't seem too concerned.

  10. Anonymous #2, I disagree. It is not true that PI had an extraordinary number of incidents which is why Disney closed the place. Sure there are fewer headaches out there now because there are fewer people out there now because there is nothing to attract people out there now.

OCSO doesn't tell Disney what to do and didn't pressure them to close PI. I have never heard that before. WDW is located in two full-fledged incorporated cities (Lake Buena Vista & Bay Lake, Florida). Disney could have their own police force if they wanted to; they choose to hire the Orange County Sheriff Dept to be their police force.

The decision to close PI clubs was all about money; they could make more money doing something else. Certainly fewer incidents was a benefit of the decision but they're not making any money out there now either.

  11. The reason Disney closed PI is because of GREED!!! They courted all these big companies to come in and buy a little piece of PI and then Disney would make all this money off of them. They close the clubs and dont have to worry about running it themselves. They leased out the "clubs". But you see Karma is a bitch. Now those companies have pulled out and Disney has been losing money for about 7 months. The poor Mouse.

  12. Well keep in mind that most of Universal CityWalk is outsourced too, although I don't think the clubs are.
