Trip Report: Revised Trip Return

As a followup to our "Trip Warning" article on February 11th in which our scheduled flights were listed, the first four flights went off without a hitch. However, the three flights we listed for the return back to Orlando did not happen because our cruise disembarkation in Port Louis, Mauritius was delayed by two days so the cruise line had to rebook the return. We ended up with these three flights to come home:

You Can Never Go Wrong With Go Go Girls!

One of our readers texted this to me.  A new flavor of Vitamin Water Zero is called Go-Go. As you can see, it's described as "kind of like go-go cage dancing, but without the cage or the dancing".  Not sure what that means but I like it!  And as we're known to say here at the Blog, you can never go wrong with Go Go girls!

Trip Report: Snapshot Of Madagascar

Madagascar is an island country located in the Indian Ocean east of the African continent. On this cruise we docked at Nosy Be off the northwest coast of Madagascar as well as at Diego Suarez on the Madagascar mainland.

The main method of transportation in the various cities on Madagascar is via tuk-tuk and they're all over the place!

The tropical scenery is beautiful.

Madagascar is mountainous but the mountains are not particularly high. But they don't see snow anywhere nor frost.

Enjoying a cold glass of World Cola, an African brand. It was as good as Coca-Cola.

The people of Madagascar are overall very poor. Many live on the side of the streets.

It was the poorest conditions we've experienced in our visits to over 100 countries although we certainly have not experienced everything.

Nonetheless, everyone was extremely friendly.

Trip Report: Addo Elephant National Park

Jambo! Located around 100km east of Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant National Park is the 3rd largest national park in the country of South Africa, the largest being the more-famous Kruger National Park.
The park is massive, covering both sides of a mountain range and containing all of the "Big 5" of African animals including elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and African buffalo. We began our tour at the Addo Main Camp which contains cabins, gift shop, convenience store and a Total petrol station.

Leaving your vehicle is not allowed at Addo Elephant National Park no matter how you traverse the park, so we had to remain in our excursion coach. There are more than 500 elephants living in the park and they're often found either at watering holes or grazing in the low-growing bush.

The elephants are nearly everywhere including this big guy.

Elephant train coming through!

Never saw any lions or rhinos but plenty of zebras.

Those two dots around the 2 o'clock position in this picture were warthogs running off.

A good time was had by all.

Trip Report: Cape Town, South Africa

After that quick visit to Namibia, it was back to South Africa and that country's second largest city, Cape Town. And while visiting for a cruise, the first destination was Table Mountain.

The city's most famous tourist attraction, Table Mountain National Park towers over Cape Town and of course is named for its flat top.

There are no roads to the top; you either hike it or take the cable car.

The cable cars are cylindrical in shape and on the ride up and down, the interior slowly rotates so that everyone gets a view of the stunning scenery.
They do recommend you arrive early to avoid the fog but unfortunately the clouds were already rolling-in upon our excursion's arrival.

One cable car goes up while another one comes down.

The non-existent view, lol. It was a good bit cooler up here compared to at the lower cable car station and putting on a sweatshirt was a necessity.

There's a restaurant up here and two souvenir shops.....and some really interesting flora.

Back at sea level, another major tourist attraction in Cape Town is called Victoria & Albert's Waterfront.

Constructed directly on the water, it is home to numerous bars, shops, restaurants and boat excursions including one to nearby Robben Island, home to the jail where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned from 1964 to 1982.

There is also a 400+ store shopping mall out here.

A good time was had by all.

Trip Report: Windhoek, Namibia

We promised some trip reports and trip reports you get. While in South Africa for a cruise, we noticed that Namibia was so close by so why not pay it a quick visit? So off we go to the Namibian capitol, Windhoek.

We began with an early-morning flight on Airlink from Capetown. This is the smallest commercial airline jet we've flown; only 36 passengers. This airline does operate larger jets too and flies to throughout southern Africa.

After climbing out of CPT, numerous green mountain chains gave way to the Namibian desert for which the country gets its name.

The capital is non-descript. Lots of malls, other shops and government buildings. Most tourists visit Namibia to go on safari, not to come here.

The Christuskirche was designed around 1900 and is part of Namibia's German history. Germany did not have a lot of African colonies compared to France, Britain, Belgium & Spain but German Southwest Africa (later Southwest Africa) was one of them. So there are a lot of ethnic Germans living here and have been for generations.

The National Museum of Namabia

Namibisches Nationalmuseum

Since this was just a daytrip, there wasn't a lot of time to see much but one definite highlight was seeing wild baboons along the highway connecting the airport to the city. It was an interesting sidetrip and a good time was had by all.

Remembering Retro Room

Around 10-11 years ago, we were hanging around a club called Retro Room. In the years following the closure of 8TRAX in Pleasure Island, it was just what the doctor ordered.

Several DJ's worked there including 8TRAX DJ Pete Haynes.

While there were plenty of dead nights there, there were some night that their retro dance floor would actually get pretty full.

The music was just like 8TRAX with mostly 70's Disco & 80's hits.

Lots of Pleasure Islanders hung-out there.

It sadly only lasted a few years. It was sold to new owners who ditched the retro format and whatever is there now doesn't attract any of us former PI people. Pete Haynes relocated back to his hometown in Wisconsin.

But while it lasted, a good time was had by all.
