PI Update: No Party At The Edison.....Yet

With live DJ music and a band, The Edison had become thee party place on Pleasure Island until they were shuttered by covid-19. When Disney Springs reopened, The Edison's reopening was delayed additional weeks. So now, while they are open for business as a restaurant and while they are offering some "light" musical entertainment most nights, the live band is not back and the DJ is not back.

The problem right now is that Disney Springs is still operating under their Phase 1 rules which means they close at 10PM nightly and entertainment is limited to low-key background stuff and only 4 nights per week. Aside from the restaurant at The Edison, they were becoming increasingly popular for music and dancing beginning at 10PM and then all the way until close to 2AM. They are completely closed now during those hours so they can't get the place cranking until management brings back "Disney Springs Late Night".  Perhaps now that Florida's governor has opened up the state, Disney will follow suit. But no indication so far.

PI The End - The Final Pleasure Island Report

THIS IS A RERUN OF THE ARTICLE WE PUBLISHED ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2008 following the final night of Pleasure Island:  It wasn't quite as crazy as it could have been and it appeared that everyone was on good behavior and I'm not aware of any incidents. Disney Security was very much in plain clothes in addition to the normal variety of uniformed guards. Unlike last weekend, it was very low key.

Adventurers Club had hundreds in line by the time they opened at 6pm. I believe capacity is 350 so they reached capacity for the first show. Some people did leave as the shows converted however later in the evening no one was leaving because everyone wanted to be part of the final performance. Those still in line outside (and there was still a long line) could not get in and they had to watch the show via outdoor monitors that were added.

All dance clubs reached capacity before midnight. Mannequins was so crowded that just like this past Thursday night, the dance floor broke again. This time it shut down around 9:15pm and clearly that takes a lot of the energy out of the room. That was not enough though to get anyone to leave. The first couple hours of music was early Dance hits from the mid to late 90's. Once the floor broke they switched to current Dance hits; don't know if that was the plan all along. Lots of filming going on for the "Mannequins Medley" that is played each night. Watch it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kkxUOnfXVE

The end was stirring. The DJ booth was full. The girl lighting tech (don't remember her name) was being hugged and she was crying. They played until 2am and the crowd demanded "One More Song"!! Finally DJ Peapod (Jim Fox) came back to the podium and played one more. There was a lot of cheering and applause for the entire cast members that work the booth.

It's hard to believe that it's been 12 years since this night. Over the years we've had Pleasure Island Reunions and 8TRAX Reunions but never a Mannequins Reunion. I know at least 3 former Mannequins DJ's who are willing to participate. We just need a venue and then a date! It's something I'll work on.

DS Update: M&M Store Concept Art

A couple weeks ago we published this look at construction status on the new M&M Store coming to Disney Springs West Side.
We came across this picture of concept art for the new store so you can see what it's going to eventually look like.

Downtown Update: What's New?

Here's what's new downtown from this past weekend's visit.  The Subway sub shop located on Orange Avenue adjacent the Wall Street Plaza entrance has closed.

The Taco Bell Cantina at the corner of Orange and Central apparently has never opened even though it seemed ready to go pre-covid19. The sign reads "Opening Soon". The menu pretty much duplicates what you'll find in a regular Taco Bell with the addition of beer and wine.

If you've not been downtown since before covid19 hit, please be aware that most of downtown's credit card activated bicycle rentals have been replaced with credit card activated electric scooter rentals. The scooters are apparently a lot more fun and a lot more popular and you'll find users literally all over the place.....including on sidewalks, driving the wrong way, not stopping at stop signs, etc. Beware!

Trip Report: Foreign Airline Status At MCO

The covid-19 situation has decimated  tourism to Orlando but  our international service is slowly beginning to come back.  Today we look at some of the international airlines that fly into Orlando to check their return status.  Virgin Atlantic (GB) used to have 4-5 daily Boeing 747's flying to the UK. On November 1st they resume service to Manchester and switch their London service from Gatwick to Heathrow. Glasgow resumes March 31st. Belfast resumes June 20th. All services will be on Airbus A330 equipment.
British Airways (GB) resumes service to London-Gatwick on October 12th using a Boeing 777. On October 25th they will begin service to London-Heathrow, also on a Boeing 777.

Lufthansa (D) resumes service to Frankfurt on October 26th using an Airbus A340. A Boeing 747-400 is pictured above.

Thomas Cook Airlines (GB) has gone bankrupt and will not be returning to Orlando. Their subsidiary Condor (D) continues in business but does not currently serve Orlando.

Norwegian Airlines (IRL) resumes service to London-Gatwick on December 9th using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. A Boeing 737 is pictured above.

Aer Lingus (IRL) resumes service to Dublin on October 26th using an Airbus A330.

Icelandair (IS) resumes service to Reykjavik on October 6th using a Boeing 757.

Air Berlin (D) is bankrupt and will not be returning.

Emirates Airlines (UAE) resumes service to Dubai-International on June 2nd using a Boeing 777.

Air Canada Rouge (CDN) resumes service to Montreal-Dorval on October 1st using an Airbus A321. Service to Toronto-Pearson also resumes on that date using Airbus A321 and Airbus A319 equipment. Seasonal service to Ottawa resumes October 25th using an Airbus A319.  A Boeing 767 is pictured above.

Westjet (CDN) resumes service to Calgary on November 5th using a Boeing 737. Service to Vancouver resumes on November 6th using a Boeing 737. Service to Halifax resumes on November 7th using a Boeing 737.

Sunwing (CDN) flew to Orlando from Toronto-Pearson but no American cities are currently on their schedule. They used Boeing 737's when I flew them last-minute last December. Their 6:20AM departure allowed me to beat a snow storm which was moving into Toronto around 9AM.

Air Transat (CDN) resumes service to Toronto-Pearson on November 1st and to  Montreal-Dorval on November 3rd, both using Airbus A321 equipment.

LATAM Airlines (PE)  (formerly LAN Peru) resumes service to Lima on November 1st using an Airbus A320.

LATAM Airlines (BR) (formerly TAM) resumes service to São Paulo-Guarulhos on October 25th. We could not verify equipment to be used at this time.

COPA (PA) resumes service to Panama City, Panama on September 18th using the Boeing 737.

Azul (BR) resumes service to Campinas on November 1st using an Airbus A330.

Aeromexico (MEX) resumes service to Mexico City this afternoon using a Boeing 737.

Volaris (MEX) has also resumed Mexico City service using Airbus A320 equipment.

We include Delta (USA) here only to mention that we lost their nonstop service to Amsterdam and right now it's not on the schedule to resume. They were using Boeing 767's on the route.

Pictured: Orlando International Airport.  Not pictured in article: Edelweiss Airlines (CH) resumes service to Zurich on October 2nd using an Airbus A340. GOL (BR) resumes service to several Brazil cities in December. All these routes are subject to change because of the covid-19 situation. Also keep in mind Americans cannot travel to many countries even if flights are operating.
