Club Reports: The Groove, Lagoon Stage, Vanity

Checking out The Groove at Universal CityWalk on a Saturday night.
They announced the DJ but too many echos where I was standing prevented me from hearing his name. He's apparently from Tampa.
Crowded but not packed as it is on some Saturdays.
Music was a mix of Hip Hop, Top 40 and some (but not enough) EDM.
During the past year The Groove has added new lighting including lasers & CO2 spraydowns!
And you can never go wrong with Go Go girls!
Meanwhile down on the CityWalk Lagoon Stage, the Saturday night dance party featuring DJ Smooth (RadioDanz, FloridaBeatRadio, XM BPM).
This is pretty much for the teens and it draws large crowds!
The music is mostly Top 40 hits and line dances.
Headed downtown next to find gridlock on I-4 and local streets.  A concert by the Eagles at Amway Center coincided with thousands gathered to party for Florida Classic weekend, the huge college football game at the Florida Citrus Bowl stadium.
Destination new club Vanity, located upstairs above Vixen, Vintage and The Fifth.
Saturday night resident DJ Freefall was in the booth performing a full House set during my visit!
Dance floor was full!
The entire venue was jammed!
I know there is some chit chat taking place about whether this is drawing new customers or just cannibalizing from ownership's other three clubs below.  I'd say yes to both.
Great music!
As the clock approached 3am, a look at the gathered masses outside on Orange Avenue.
OPD out in force trying to push people out of the street towards their cars.
There was no trouble; a good time was had by all!

  1. Ahhh, never seen the CO2 spray downs at the Groove. That's a good addition!

  2. I wonder how many peeps in the Groove knew who that guy was? Why bring a Tampa Dj in there that is probably not much different than the Orlando guys you would normally see in there? #doesnotcompute

  3. CO2 added a couple months ago.

  4. The only thing The Groove is missing now is a revolving dance floor....and more EDM!

Not sure about the Tampa DJ's. But I really liked Mondo & Tone when they did their gigs there. They've done their Miami guest DJ's too.

  5. I think you're missing the point. ;) Orlando has Djs that can rock every bit as hard as those guys so why import Djs from another city? Just sayin..

  6. Yes, Orlando does. I guess going out of town makes the event seem more special.

  7. DJ Is Nick James from Hallucination Recordings (home to Rabbit In The Moon). I am one of the residents in Ybor at Filthy Richard (www.filthyparty.com) but I also work for Promo Only, Inc. in Orlando. They do book Orlando DJs, as well...just a rotation thing. As for the "not enough EDM"....agreed. The format is supposed to lean more that way now so you should be happier with what the the guys (and girls) are playing now. :)
