Over at The Groove in CityWalk you can watch champion DJ's spinning all night, live on stage. Special guest appearance from DJ Irie (Miami Heat) who will be doing one set.
Bob, what's your opinion on why they bring these out of town Djs like Irie in to the Groove?
ReplyDeleteThese guys don't produce tracks that other Djs use or that sell like crazy on Beatport or iTunes (think someone like Calvin Harris) so they only thing they might bring to the table is their library of cool remixes on tracks that the usual Groove Djs already play.
I don't get the concept. Nothing against Irie or any of those other ones they bring in as "guests" but why bring them to such a tourist heavy club where the average person walking in the door has no idea who they are?
An interesting question with a complicated answer. CityWalk management was excited to tell me late last year that they would be bringing in out-of-town EDM DJ's on Saturday nights approximately monthly in 2013. No reason was given and I interpreted it simply that they wanted to do something different in order to get more of the local market.
ReplyDeleteThe Groove has been late to the EDM parade. The sentiment there was (right or wrong) that TG attracted mainly tourists and tourists wanted familiar music. Certainly Hip Hop and 90's Remixes fit the bill. And indeed, put on an EDM song at The Groove 3 years ago and most people stopped dancing. Other than what I called their annual "Techno Night" on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, EDM was rare in The Groove. I made regular comments here on SPI Blog that one was more likely to hear EDM at Latin Quarter (thanks to Sirius/XM BPM DJ Leony) than at TG!
Times changed and zoom ahead to late 2011 and you have DJ Willy playing entire EDM sets at The Groove...and patrons dancing. Jump further ahead to 2012-2013 and DJ King is playing a lot of EDM and they've brought in John Campsiano, Jay Mac and Jimmy Joslin, all locals and all dedicated EDM guys.
Yeah, the monthly DJ's are not big names or producers but they're probably relatively cheap. And the main thing I think is that they're DIFFERENT. I like it!
I hope City Walk continues down the EDM path. I guess it's always good to hear different Djs and what they bring to the table.
