Lady Gaga VS Yolandi Vi$$er

Back in October the Blog covered a concert at The Beacham by Die Antwoord, an up and coming South African "Zef" group.  The article included a video of their defining hit "I Fink U Freeky" which you can view again here.  It was one of those videos that stops you in your tracks to watch it.  I've told the story before of being in The Castle in Tampa one night a few years ago when they played a video called "Just Dance" by an unknown singer named Lady Gaga.  And when they played it, everyone just sort of stopped what they were doing and watched.  The "I Fink U Freeky" video, which features female vocalist Yolandi Vi$$er and male vocalist Ninja, is quite similar. You just know they're going to be big!
But before we begin today's title story, enjoy yet another video from Die Antwoord called "Baby's On Fire".  They speak and sing in both English and Afrikaans:

Well apparently there's a little spat going on between Lady Gaga and Yolandi.  According to DStv, Lady Gaga invited Die Antwoord to tour with her and was turned down. Supposedly on Twitter Gaga responded with, "I fink u freaky but you don't have a hit. Hundred thousand tickets sold in SA. #thatmyshit".  The South Africans responded with "lady… even tho u r 'larger' than us… we still cooler than u… plus we don't have prawns in our private".   And that was followed with this sarcastic video "Fatty Boom Boom" in which Yolandi is dressed-up as Lady Gaga, including her iconic meat dress!

We'll see if a year from now Yolandi is a household word or not.

  1. First of all, the "twitter" war between Gaga and Die Antwoord started after the Fatty Boom Boom video was released. Second, the "Lady Gaga" in their video is not Yolandi, it is a professional transvestite dressed up as Lady Gaga. Thought you'd like these points clarified.

  2. Either way.. I don't get Die Antwoord. I would not call it anything close to EDM music in any form and frankly I think they will die out in 3 months.

  3. Thanks for the info Derrek!

Whether they can become a household name is the point of the article; I think they will.
