One of the latest rumors coming out of Pleasure Island is that once the so called Plan B is implemented, there will be a name change to the Island as part of it. As sad as that might be, it does make sense from Disney's perspective. As long as the name remains Pleasure Island, those of us remembering the old PI will compare it to what we had and complain that it's not as good. We may still do that anyway but with a name change it drives home the point that we're not in Kansas, er Pleasure Island anymore. It would be a whole new place. I don't know what the new name is going to be but one theory is that the entire complex will be simply called Downtown Disney and that they do away with having three separate names. That sentiment is supported by the new Downtown Disney Guidemap posted next to Mannequins at the PI #2 Bridge and sent to me by Blog roving reporter William. "Marketplace, Pleasure Island and West Side" get just a small mention and instead store names are grouped by store category rather than by location. No sense mentioning which of the three sections a store or venue is located in when there is just going to be one. Thanks William!
Oh boy! Finally, the Disney Outdoor Shopping Outlet, this is something Guests have been clamoring to get for years. . .NOT! Get with it Disney, we want our Nightlife back! You know Adventuring, Laugter, Music, Dancing, Beverages, not what we can find at cheeper prices off I4!
ReplyDeleteI first of all agree "most deffinatly"
ReplyDeleteWe need our nightlife back so we all can party, dance, drink and Rock on!!! on the Island.
If that's what the new name is going to be?
Not to mention with the old style map grouped by area, MP had tons of stuff to do; PI and WS did not.
ReplyDeleteThis way makes it look more evenly spread across DTD (even though it's not).
they should call it
ReplyDeletePleasure-less Island!
and or Island!
or we made a dumb ass mistake Island!
even better "WTF did we do island"
Brian...LOL!!! Those names are great...
ReplyDeleteYipee! A Disney mall! Crappy stuff at outrageous prices!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's just what I want to do on vacation.
At least they're being honest about what their "bold new vision" is all about.
Has Bob Iger ever actually visited Downtown Disney?!
Toad, sources say Iger was one of the visitors to WDW two weeks ago but I don't know if he visited PI. Sources say he ate without questioning a lot of the bullshit being fed to him!
ReplyDeletebob could not say much because he has responsibilities to the stock holders eventhough HE knows the mess that the Island is in. he could never convince the board to throw tons of money back at the island in one lump some..but he may get his way by taking small bites and reinventing a venue at a time and by gaining more foot traffic through the 3 defined areas, thus positioning decisions to use whats currently their..like mdp and traxx
ReplyDeleteSounds like someone who KNOWS what is going on. It's little things like this that keep the hope alive!
ReplyDelete>Sources say he ate without questioning a lot of the bullshit being fed to him!
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Maybe it just "looked" like he was eating it....but really wasn't. Interesting.
Sorry but I don't buy the stockholder bit - at all. Historically they have done what is best (at the time) for what the person in charge sees fit. That's why HE/SHE is the boss. How many years did the Body Wars exhibit sit empty at EPCOT? I saw the building open for the first time in years this past spring for the Flower and Garden show and it was NOT the Body Wars exhibit. How many years did the site of the second phase of Pop Century Resort sit there vacant - 9, only just now to emerge as a new venue (they blamed that one on 9/11)? As much as I would love to see P.I. alive again, the reality is, it will come back some day in some form but I'm willing to bet that it won't re-imerge as what we all knew and loved. It's just not a huge priority right now, as I once thought it could be after the initial closing. If it were, the cranes would be out there working hard - just like over at MK. Seems to me that vacation clubs, movies and the occasional spotlight on the parks (new Fantasy Land Expansion) are in first place. Not trying to dash anyones hopes or dreams, just trying to look at it from an - I don't want to get my hopes up again and be crushed point of view.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that keeping up the pressure via this blog or any other is a bad idea. Quite the opposite actually. But the company is changing, every day and things may not line up the way we P.I. Fans want.
Long live the memories of P.I. and thanks to KingBob for keeping us in the loop!
Dear ,King BOB is it possible to take all those photos of the night clubs around orlando and mail them to Mr Iger , disney executives & the stockholders at the annual stockholders meeting. Just to show them how much money they are missing out on. I don't think the stockholders are going to be to happy with Mr Iger and some Disney executives decisions when it comes to profits. Especially with this economy every dollar counts. To have a prime piece of property like PL Island for the last two years closed is totally Asinine. Citywalk & the other clubs around orlando are lovin it. The proof is in the photos.
ReplyDeleteJeff, the stockholder angle does make some sense to me but your other points are well-taken. You do have a good sense of what seem to be the Disney priorities right now.
ReplyDeleteEl Vejaco, if you look at the Flag Counter for the states that have generated over 1000 hits to this website since I added that in July, 2009 (14 months ago), only one is west of the Mississippi River. The Save PI Blog is read in Burbank & Glendale. They know the state of the Island. They see the pictures.
The Disney store Disney vacation club and no pleasure island are all things are things disney screwed up.
ReplyDeleteKingBob, I guess there could be some sense to it - I suppose I am just venting frustration that so many people want action yet, it seems like they (WDW folks) mostly end up doing the opposite of what they hear people saying. To me that sounds like a corporate boss wanting things his way and not being open to other opinions. You know - "I'm the boss and what I say goes" sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteBosses can certainly be wrong.
ReplyDeleteHistory shows us how bad Paul Pressler and Cynthia Harriss ran Disneyland into the ground several years back.
everyone loves rumors, and yes sometimes rumors turn to reality, but this blog and following are all too hopeful of pi return. pi will return, but as a wwhole new attempt at entertainment. mdp cant just be reopened and operate like it did in the past, nor can any of the other venues. things have to be reinvented to appeal to a broader spectrum of entertainment, the disney brand. the creativeness of the island was stellar in the early 90's but became withered over the years and could not be reengineered without large amounts of capital. there is a master plan however the global economies have pushed everyones schedules behind. look at macdonalds leaving pi..do you think they would just reopen again as the same product?
ReplyDeleteI have an idea. McDonald's should return as a chicken place. Everyone loves chicken. And hey, since the main language in downtn Disney is now spanish, make it a latin chicken place. Yes, that will be good.
ReplyDeleteEveryone loves Fresh Latin Chicken.
ReplyDeleteChildren are clamoring for it.
