Mannequins Memories

Faithful reader Ken is constantly scanning the internet in order to share Pleasure Island memories with Blog readers. Today he reports three new Mannequins videos posted onto YouTube by their member DamiensMagic. This one is the best of the three, in my opinion:

This was filmed on a Wednesday night in 1991 yet you can see how crowded it was. The music was cutting-edge Techno back then, something we'd now call Classic Dance. Hip Hop did not exist so no Hip Hop remixes! The lighting and sound systems in Mannequins were incredible. How about reopening the place!! Thanks, Ken!

  4. Agree. 1990-95 was its heyday. Good to see the old dance squad. We used to go to house parties where the dancers always showed up, everyone was like family and used to hang together on and off the clock. Only one I knew fairly well was Pauline (w/ ponytail at 3:14). Last I heard she married a NY restaurant owner, had a child & moved back to California near her family.

  5. This was filmed nearly 20 years ago. Mannequins was the only music club that operated the entire life of PI under the same name and music format. Great place and still relevant. Times have changed but Mannequins' niche is still valid.

  6. The lighting obviously in the ceiling is representative of the time. When did the lighting rehab occur to include the mode modern smart lights that Manns had until 2008?

  7. the lights in the end was about 2004-end maybe? they changed light many times over the years!

  8. I think MDP last closed for a major refurbishment (closing for a couple months) in 2001 or 2002.

They may have changed lighting after that, however.
