Trip Report: Nassau, Bahamas

Greetings from Nassau on New Providence Island. Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas.

There is so much new construction taking place in Nassau. There is a brand new cruise terminal to greet visitors arriving via cruise ships.

The terminal area is a mix of brick-and-mortar shops and a lot of these kiosk stores.

Directly across Bay Street from the cruise terminal is Rawson Square, home to the Bahamian Parliament buildings. Bay Street is block-after-block of souvenir shops, jewelry stores and restaurants.

It's not necessary to purchase an excursion to see many of the highlights of Nassau. They can easily be accessed on foot from the cruise terminal which is downtown.

The Queen's Staircase is within walking distance. It was carved by slaves in the late 1700's into solid limestone.

Arriving at the top, numerous straw market vendors along with Fort Fincastle. It was built in 1793. Admission is just $3.00.

From up here you can see the cruise port, the busiest in the world. In port today were Carnival Sunshine, Disney Magic, our ship Carnival Glory and MSC Seashore. Only 4 ships in port today and we've seen 6 ships here on occasion. That large building on the left is the brand new U.S. Embassy building.

Nassau's famous water tower has been closed for around 20 years following a hurricane that came through. In the news this past month is that someone is going to finally repair and reopen it! There is an elevator in the middle of the structure but going up via the circular staircase was always a highlight of any visit to Nassau. Because of its height, the views from the open-air top far exceed the views from Fort Fincastle.

From Fort Fincastle you can also see the Atlantis Resort on adjacent Paradise Island. This pic we took later was better so we're posting this view.

Also visible a bit farther off, the Baha Mar Resort complex on Cable Beach. You can see why Nassau is the number one cruise destination in the world!

Trip Report: Bimini, Bahamas

Greetings from the Bimini Islands, the westernmost islands in the Bahamas. Because of their position in the Atlantic Ocean, they are the islands most-closest to the United States and just 50 miles east of Miami.
We're sailing on Carnival Glory which departed yesterday from Port Canaveral. We were going to be the last ship to depart so we got to view the "Parade of Ships" departing before us. This is the second largest cruise ship in the world, the brand new Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas.

Sister ship Carnival Freedom sailing out. Other than different names for the venues on board, Carnival Freedom and Carnival Glory are otherwise identical ships.

Disney Wish. Disney gets top dollar for their sailings and if you have kids it's probably a must. But otherwise, you can sail for one-third the price on Carnival, Royal Caribbean and MSC.

Cruise ships generally go to New Providence Island (Nassau) in the Bahamas and to their private islands. Fewer ships go to Grand Bahama Island (Freeport/Lucaya) and even fewer to Bimini. But with the construction of this new pier, Bimini is becoming more popular. North Bimini Island is only about 7 miles long and only 700 yards wide.

The casino provides free tram transportation between the dock and their property or their beach. It's also possible to hire a taxi to tour the island. Our solution was to rent a golf cart which cost $100 for the day. Just remember to drive on the left! There really isn't all that much to see on Bimini but it is beautiful and definitely worth a visit.

The Bimini Bay Resort, now known as Resorts World Bimini, is the most modern destination in the Bimini Islands. It is one of only 3 casinos in the Bahamas, the other two being in the Nassau area.

Resorts World Bimini is anchored by the casino and this Hilton hotel complex.

Beautiful white sand beaches line the western shore of North Bimini.

And looking south towards Radio Beach.

Where we had lunch at famous CJ's Deli. Many beachfront shacks here where they'll slice-off the top of a coconut for you and fill it with whatever liquor you desire!

It was all too soon time to sail on. That's MSC Seashore off in the distance, sailing from MSC's private island Ocean Cay which is also part of the Bimini Islands. We'll see her again up close tomorrow in Nassau.

DS Update: No Nightlife, No Wildlife?

We know Disney Springs has virtually no nightlife, but did you know there's virtually no wildlife either?

River otters used to frolic in the canal between Village Lake and the former No. 4 (subsequently renamed No. 5) Bridge.

But sometime during the conversion of Downtown Disney to Disney Springs, they disappeared. We don't know if they still dwell in the river between Disney Springs and the Disney Port Orleans resorts.
