DS Update: The Labor Day Bash Is Back!

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Labor Day Bash taking place on the Sunday night of Labor Day weekend at House of Blues. As you can see, the line up includes Sunday Night SIN resident DJ's Magic Mike (USA) and Jimmy Joslin (USA), joined by legends DJ Icey (USA), DJ Baby Anne (USA) and DJ Kimball Collins (USA). The show will run from 8PM to 1AM. Advance tickets can be purchased at the House of Blues box office (verify hours before you go) or online here. House of Blues is located in Disney Springs West Side.

 

DS Update: Another Early Bird Price Increase

The regular price to go on the Disney Springs balloon ride operated by Aerophile has not been raised recently. It's still $29.99 + tax. What has increased is the Early Bird price. You may recall that a few years back they ran a "10 Before 10" special every morning where the ride cost just $10 including tax before 10AM. After their covid19 reopening, the price was raised to $15 plus tax. Well that was recently increased again to $20 plus tax = $21.30. So $20 is better than $30, but not by that much. And you have to get out there really early, pretty much before anything else in Disney Springs has opened.

 

They don't advertise the Early Bird special. You have to ask for it before 10AM.

At Mannequins, there was music.

The music led to dancing on the revolving dance floor.

PI Update: The Walls Were Closing In On Us

July, 2014, ten years ago. Construction was hot and heavy on beautiful Pleasure Island. As you can see in the background, no Rock'n'Roll Beach Club building. It had already been demolished with Motion meeting the same fate immediately prior to it. Walls surrounded the No. 2 Bridge as well as Mannequins. We just didn't know what was coming and we still had hope.

PI Update: Remembering Disco Demolition Night

Rock'n'Roll fans absolutely hated Disco music. It competed with the Rock market and numerous Rock stars came out with their own Disco songs. Disco Demolition Night on July 12, 1979 is considered by many to be the night Disco died. It took place at Comiskey Park in between games of a double header between the home Chicago White Sox and the visiting Detroit Tigers. The Sox lost the first game and then the umpires called a forfeit against the Sox for the second game because of unplayable field condition. A local radio station had invited guests to attend and bring Disco records with them and they would blow them up in center field during the intermission. They did and the rest is history. While the popularity of 70's Disco waned after that event, it really just evolved into 80's Funk. And on beautiful Pleasure Island, the two sounds lived together for many years with Rock'n'Roll Beach Club on one side of Hill Street and 8TRAX on the other. Long live Disco!

 

International Flavor At Florida Mall

We recently posted an article about international fast fashion retail at Disney Springs and that included Spanish retailer ZARA. We were recently at the Florida Mall in Orlando and saw they also have a number of international retailers there. ZARA has a number of cheaper brands such as, Bershka, Pull&Bear and Stradivarius that operate worldwide but not in the United States or Canada.

Also at Florida Mall, Swedish retailer H&M. This store is rather small; their outlet in Mall at Millenia is far larger.

 

Another European fast-fashion retailer at Florida Mall is Spain-based Mango. This store used to be in the main terminal at Orlando International Airport but that relocated over here about a year ago.

Garage Clothing is a rapidly expanding Canadian chain and they've been in the mall for at least a decade but now in a larger location.

Lastly, Irish retailer Primark is under construction in the courtyard portion of Florida Mall and will be opening on August 29th. This rapidly expanding company is known for ultra-cheap prices. They recently opened in Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise so this location will be just their second Florida location. A new distribution center in Jacksonville is an indication even more stores will be coming to the state.

PI Update: Disney's Best Kept Secret

July 2010 was nearly two years after Pleasure Island closed and virtually nothing was taking place on the Island to replace our beloved clubs. We ran this editorial 14 years ago:

 

When are heads finally going to roll at Pleasure Island? We are rapidly approaching the 2-year anniversary of the PI clubs closing yet we see no action being taken to create any new vision for our Island. As I circulated around crazy crowded Universal CityWalk last night, I remained in disbelief that Disney gave away this huge adult customer base to their major competitor!

I know they had a plan and it fell through because of the economy. I know their plan was supposed to generate more net income than the clubs did. I get that. But their failure to take any significant action to remedy the financial bleeding taking place cannot be excused. Living statues and small bands are cute but they hardly make up for what Pleasure Island used to represent. I'm looking forward to the so-called outdoor ultra-lounge but why in the world do you put your Guests out in the humidity and rain when vacant air-conditioned buildings stand right behind?

Packed among the masses last night, I commented to a CityWalk general manager that they were really raking it in with PI closed. He just gave me a shit-eating grin. Disney's best kept secret? It ain't timeshares. It's when the hell are they going to take some real action out there!

PI Update: What A Mess!

Ten years ago this month, July 2014, the Island was a mess! The Pleasure Island bypass had been constructed so that demolition and construction work could take place unimpeded along Hill Street. Comedy Warehouse and Laffers Cantina had been razed as had the front portion of 8TRAX. Construction of new storefronts was taking place along Hill Street. Adventurers Club, BET Soundstage and Mannequins were largely untouched at this point.
