CW Update: Much The Same

We don't spend all that much time at Universal CityWalk but we did drop by Saturday night to check it out. Basically, it's still the same that it's been these past 11 years in the post-PI era. Red Coconut Club still has a live band early on weekend nights with a DJ between sets and after the band ends.

Bob Marley's still has a live band playing mostly Reggae. Years ago a CityWalk manager told The Blog that Bob Marley's was "cash cow" for CityWalk with a long line of people paying $7 each to get in. It was still that way as we passed by on Saturday night.

Rising Star is primarily a Karaoke club but it differentiates itself from the others by having a live band accompany the singers along with a couple dancing girls. Given the popularity of Karaoke, it's a well-traveled venue. It also gets even crazier between band sets when the DJ plays Top 40 hits and everyone starts dancing!

Occasionally there will be a DJ playing at Antojitos for special events but otherwise it's just a Mexican restaurant. Long gone is former occupant Latin Quarter featuring DJ Leony (USA). It was the craziest Ladies Nights ever on Thursday nights when Leony was known to throw down many entire House and EDM sets! Not anymore.

Margaritaville is still there with a live Top 40 band early.

And of course The Groove is still CityWalk's main dance club and it gets packed on Friday and Saturday nights. Their Thursday night 80's Night is long gone. We were hopeful when Electromagic took over the DJ contract several years back that we would hear more electronic dance music in the club but it has remained primarily Hip Hop and Top 40. A recent dispute between Electromagic and many of their weekday resident DJ's saw several of the DJ's resign. The Groove remains The Groove that you know post-Pleasure Island, not The Groove you remember from the late 90's/early 00's when it was an electronic dance music club.

Brick Bar Coming To Orlando

We have a Christmas-themed bar, we have a Halloween-themed bar. And now we will have a LEGO-themed bar. The only difference is the LEGO-themed bar is a pop up bar and will exist for two days only in  a secret location somewhere in the Orlando area!
Taking place March 20th and March 21st only.
Sadly, I will be in Miami for Miami Music Week.
But YOU don't have to miss it.

PI Update: Ominous Sign

This was an ominous sign back in March, 2009 when the wires that ran between PI offices (located  aft in Mannequins) and the PI ticket booths (in front of the Island in old railroad cars) were cut. We just didn't know how ominous it was at the time.
We speculated then that since PI tickets were no longer going to be sold in those booths, they no longer needed to connect to the computer servers located in the office.
We were right. Not happy we were right.

PI Update: Coming To The Island

Don't miss the Masquerade party at The Edison coming up on Saturday, February 22nd. It's only $65++ which is cheap for a formal evening event at TED and includes trays of appetizers plus their whole gauntlet of entertainment. Masks required. Details.

DS Update: Trophy Room To Reopen Downtown

As you know, Disney Springs' Trophy Room closed on May 31st and they indicated at the time that they would become an internet retailer and indeed they did. LINK  Now, according to the Orlando Business Journal, they plan to open a new store in downtown Orlando on the ground floor of the Modera luxury apartment building. As you likely know, Trophy Room is owned by Michael Jordan's son Marcus Jordan. With downtown Orlando having virtually no retail apparel businesses, this should prove interesting.

UNI Update: Marshmello Coming to Mardi Gras!

We always look forward to seeing the musician lineup for the Mardi Gras concert series at Universal Studios. It's typically made-up of big name but long-past-their-prime acts and the 2020 lineup was no different.  It includes such acts as Bell Biv DeVoe (USA) and REO Speedwagon (USA). But we were absolutely shocked to see DJ Marshmello (USA) in this year's lineup!! That's huge! We spotted him in South Beach a few years ago during Miami Music Week.

The only time I've seen him play was at the invitation-only Sirius/XM Music Lounge that same evening. He's scheduled for March 22nd at the theme park's Music Stage. You should plan to grab a spot at least 5 hours before the 8:30PM start time if you want to get close.

PI Update: Remembering The President's Visit

Today we remember that day back in 2012 when then President Obama paid a visit to Pleasure Island to make the case that the Pleasure Island clubs should be reopened! Check out the Blog's news story from that day here.

Ouch!

DS Update: M&M World Moving To Disney Springs

In case you missed the news, M&M World is relocating their store currently located in Florida Mall to Disney Springs West Side. It will move to this combined location that was formerly occupied by Curl by Sammy Duval and Fit2Run stores.
Lots happening on the West Side with Cirque du Soleil reopening soon with a brand new show and a new restaurant going into the former-Bongos space. In addition, CityWorks should open this quarter with Disney Springs' first brewery. Never count-out the Mouse!
