Club Report: Envy (Mexico City)

Save Pleasure Island Blog roving reporter Thommy was roving last week in Mexico City and sent us this report from Envy Nightclub.
There are light shows on the walls!
There are light shows on the ceiling!
And there are light shows on the floor!
All together now!
Nothing like this in Orlando!  A good time was had by all!

I doubt anyone with any real cash would open a club like that in Orlando because the history shows that owners/managers in Orlando don't really know what they're doing, generally speaking. Usually the first sign of incompetence for a club is who they put in the Dj booth. Just sayin.. ;)

I will say this again.

today it doesn't really matter about the DJ because of the laptop DJ's unless we are talking about charging big money to get in?

you must have the same attitude as the managers/owners of all these failed Orlando clubs over the years. if you really think a kid with a laptop is a "professional" Dj that knows how to read and work a crowd, you're mistaken. There is no substitute for experience.

do you like laptop DJ's yes or no? I can not tell if you do or not? so do you?

IF you do. well then I will say it again! if you are into the club thing and have been going out long enough pay attention to what gets played and how the crowd reacts. then all you really need is a laptop and the DJ program! to real experience needed.
now if you are talking OLD school 12" and or CD then yes you need experience.
I see no need to pay top pay to a DJ for the laptop DJ.

the failed clubs downtown failed because they are a hole in the wall club and most owners fail to reinvest in the club or trow the money around thinking they are never going to run out of money or let someone else run it they keep/take money out of the owners pocket.

"then all you really need is a laptop and the DJ program! to real experience needed."

One of the dumbest statements I've ever seen.

Thanks Bob! It was a pretty crazy experience and when they started really using those walls, it was really cool! The music was all top 40/EDM, but a little too ADD for my taste. Titanium doesn't need to be mixed or cut at a drop into another song. At the same time, some of the mashups the guy did were masterful to the point I pulled out my phone and recorded so I can recreate them.

Cover was a steep 250 pesos, about 16 USD. Drinks were extremely WEAK. I had 2 long islands and 2 rum and cokes in what was supposed to be a gay club and the most I got was a low buzz. I was sober most of the time but the music was still good enough to make me dance so it was ok.

Hope you all enjoyed!

you must be a DJ? a laptop DJ maybe? IN my "opinion" if your going to laptop DJ you should NOT get paid as much. you let the laptop do 98% of the work.
are you the one who is March 5, 2015 at 12:48 PM and or March 5, 2015 at 7:31 PM can you answer are you a laptop DJ? IF you are I think you are a laptop DJ and ight just be ticked because i said this might be scared that the club(s) will not pay out as much?
just sayin.......

What? Some of the world's top dj's are "laptop djs"? I agree, makes no sense. Thommy, good pictures, thankyou

Most of the world's top DJ's are working off a laptop or a thumb drive. The danger is that the DJ has prerecorded the program and is just standing there twirling a few nobs and not playing music/reading the crowd to draw a positive reaction.

Thanks, Thommy! Looks like a great place. Too bad the drinks are weak in a place that charges so much to get in.

I'm a professional Dj, not a "laptop dj". Not even sure what you mean by that.
When I joined my first record pool in 1995, all of the new music came out as 12 inch singles on vinyl. CDs were in the picture but the only cd players that could be used in the clubs were the Denon double well players with the separate controller. You had compilations like the Promo Only dance CDs coming out and various other
services but most individual tracks were released on vinyl. If you visited a typical club, you'd see a Rane MP24 mixer, pair of 1200s and a Denon or similar two piece CD player unit.
Your high school kids of today wouldn't even know what to do with that setup yet we were killing in the clubs back then.

Serato Dj comes on the scene in 2004 and music distribution starts to really slant towards CDs. Now the box of music coming each week/month from the record pool is some vinyl and mostly CDs. You're also starting to see digital distribution come into the picture.

Fast forward to 2009 and vinyl is completely out of the picture with the exception of the vinyl control records designed for Serato. New music is mostly CDs with digital distribution gaining quickly. Soundcloud and such was just getting off the ground and not really a factor yet.

Fast forward to today and the distribution of new music is completely digital. Record labels can push mp3s or .wavs directly to mailing lists and use digital distribution systems like Fatdrop. CDs are now pointless. Soundcloud, Mediafire, Torrent, etc. have exploded and you have mp3 bootlegs flying all over the place.

Vinyl is still confined to just control records for Rekordbox, Serato and Traktor.

If you go to a festival and see the Pioneer CDJ2000 Nexus players up there in the booth used by Tiesto, Avicii, etc., what's actually happening is their plugging a thumb drive into one of the players and the other 3 players are able to read the mp3/wav files on the drive because all 4 players are linked by ethernet cables. They're using the same setup as Serato on a laptop just without the laptop.

They're able to scroll through the tracks on the screen of the CDJ 2000 using the scroll wheel.

The bottom line is that the equipment used today is mostly driven by the music distribution and like it or not, the laptop is the primary weapon of the Dj regardless of who you're talking about.

If you knew anything about the history, music or equipment of actually being a professional Dj, you'd know why your "laptop dj" comment was so stupid.

OK you are saying my comment/opinion is so stupid as you said? then why did you just comment and I quote "the laptop is the primary weapon of the Dj"

again lets have a night in a club with a top known DJ and and nobody DJ behind a certain? both use the laptop MP3 thumb drive what ever?

this is what a am talking about Mixxx - Free MP3 DJ Mixing Software(www.mixxx.org) or VIRTUAL DJ SOFTWARE - MP3 Mixing Software (www.virtualdj.com)

yes I know this is the NOW of the clubs. well not 100% but most. so it's all about who you know not what you know.

My comment about the laptop was pointing out that it has become the key piece of equipment that professional Djs use. Your comment still doesn't make any sense because you say it as though it's a special type of Dj. It's also condescending to every professional working in the industry. "so it's all about who you know not what you know" Another stupid comment. It doesn't matter who you know, if you're working a crowd in a club somewhere and you don't know what you're doing, it's going to become pretty obvious pretty quickly. If you're Dj'ing a club in Downtown Orlando on a Saturday night and I'm across the street from you in a different club on the same night, that would be a real world test of whether you know what you're doing or not. I have a couple decades of experience behind me working in multiple states in every kind of venue with every kind of crowd imaginable so I know what to play (both song & remix), when to play it and most importantly, what NOT to play and when NOT to play it.
