Last Night at Atlantic Dance

I've always commented about how Atlantic Dance Hall is feast or famine when it comes to attendance. Well last night it was feast....a really big feast....the largest crowd I've ever seen there! I'm told there was a heart convention in town and also that a "party bus" dropped off 75 people. There was easily 400 in the club and that sure makes it more fun! Pictured in the fourth picture above are Mannequins regulars Gary and Mark on both ends with Friday night Atlantic Dance DJ Tony in the middle. Tony said Friday night was also crowded although not quite as many as Saturday night. Format is Top 40 and whatever anyone requests which runs the gamut from 70's, 80's and Dance.

Atlantic Dance Hall (ADH) is annoying since the program is WIDE OPEN.

They need to have more specific nights so the music isn't all over the place like it is now. I'm giving it a few more times, but I haven't liked it so much thus far.

...despite the request board, they have not played anything close to some of the dance songs I've requested. I understand the DJ has a limited amount, and probably won't have the great MDP-type mixes, but some basics shouldn't be so difficult.
I did not go to BET or MOTiON much since I didn't care for that music, but that's most of what they play at ADH.

The problem with theme nights is that their philosophy is they don't cater to the locals, they cater to conventions. Thus, they don't want a big convention coming in on a Tuesday when it's techno night and then pissing off the convention.

Most of the djs do play a lot of top 40s. They wait as long as possible before they start playing it, but the college kids are relentless.

The other problem with dance songs is that they are a video dance, so they have to have a video to go with a song. DJ Tony seems to be willing to compromise on that once in a while and I know DJ cruze does as well, but that's about it. The other ones stick strictly to songs with a video.

the problem with Atlantic dance is that the bartenders are assholes!! You would think they would want to provide quality service to the guests who pay salary (tips). I refuse to pay $8 for a knock off red bull and vodka when it's served slowly and with attitude.

Joe, I agree with None's response. They have to cater to the convention & meeting crowd which is a broad range of ages and musical interests. So most of the music is stuff you hear on the radio which is Top 40 and Hip Hop. Thankfully, NO COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!! And I also concur that a lot of our favorite Dance music from back in the day has no Video to go with it. Such is not the case with current Dance; YouTube has all the current songs.

Anon, I've not had any unfriendly service at ADH. When it's busy it's hard to get served from that little bar. They do open a side bar when they expect it will be busy but they're not any better at guessing than I am. Side bar not open this past Saturday night.

they will only open the side bar if they get swamped on a given night and then advised by the same group that they will be back the next night. Then they will justify opening the other bar. If they get swamped and aren't expecting it, which they never are, everyone suffers. People think they can just open up a second bar but it isn't that easy. You have to have the staff and the register setup and the bar stocked and all that stuff. It's takes prep time to open a second bar

Try tipping the bartender and being patient. You'd be surprised but ADH has some of the NICEST bartenders on property, who KNOW how to take care of the guests (when the guests take care of them.)
